Secondary cooling during continuous casting of steel is an important process that has a bearing on the quality of the steel grade being produced and the production speed achieved during the casting process. Different casting forms such as billets, blooms and slabs have their own cooling requirements as well.

The cooling nozzles have to be flexible in order to be able to handle different flow rates without a change in spray angle and spray coverage. Different sections of the continuous casting require different cooling rates and therefore different coolant flow rates.

The overall productivity of the plant depends on the speed at which the casting can be generated which in turn depends upon the cooling efficacy achievable in order to keep up with the increasing heat extraction rate required.
